Loose Material Around Chimneys Look for lose material or wear around chimneys, vents and pipes. Make sure there are no gaps where water can penetrate. 3. Damaged Shingles You are looking for cracked, curled, torn, bald, or missing shingles. 4. Signs of Moisture Check for signs of moisture, mold, or rot, especially on the lowest parts of your roof where water may pool. 5. Examine Drainage System Check to make sure that all gutters and downspouts are securely attached and unobstructed. In addition to checking the exterior, go into your attic and check for: 1. Sagging Spots 2. Signs of Water Damage or Leaking This could be mold or water damaged spots on the attic ceiling or floor. 3. Dark Spots or Trails This may show the path in which water is entering your home. 4. Sunlight If you see sunlight shining through your roof, call an expert.
