If you’re in the market for new siding for your home, you may come across some unfamiliar terms. While reputable siding contractors can answer any of your questions, it’s important that you also understand siding terms yourself. Remember, a siding installation is a major home improvement project, so it’s best to protect your investment.
As your trusted siding company in the area, we share some of the siding terms you might not know about and the meaning behind each.
Lap siding, also called clapboard, is one of the most popular siding styles. This siding style is installed horizontally on your home, with the boards installed from the bottom up, so they overlap. When one panel of siding overlaps another, it’s called a lap joint. Since lap siding can come in many different textures and colors, it’s a favorite among many homeowners.
Shingle siding, which can also be referred to as shake siding in some cases, is individual cuts of wood of varying widths. Modern shingle siding is made from low-maintenance materials, such as fiber cement. This siding is often manufactured in panels, which helps make it easier to install while maintaining the classic aesthetic appeal.
A plumb is a position or measurement that is exactly 90 degrees from a level surface. During your siding replacement, it’s important that the siding panel is plumb to the exterior wall of your home. Otherwise, the siding will be crooked. Meanwhile, a square or speed square is a tool used to achieve a perfect 90-degree angle between two objects.
Blind and face nailing are two general ways to secure lap siding to the wall. With blind nailing, the fastener drives through the top of the plank. With face nailing, it drives through the overlap at the bottom of the plank. Although most siding experts may recommend blind nailing as the best method to secure lap siding, face nailing may be required for certain installations.
